COLLISION REPAIR & REFINISHING TECHNOLOGY

The Collision Repair & Refinishing Technology program is a three-year program designed to prepare students for the Collision Repair/Refinishing trade.  The repair of automobiles and trucks has become one of the fastest growing and most important industries in the modern world.  Since almost every family in America owns and operates at least one, if not two, automobiles, a good collision repair/refinish technician need not worry about being unemployed.

Course Description
This course includes methods used to repair automobile bodies.  Instruction is given in the removal of dents, repair of cuts, gouges, methods of refinishing, types of finishes, replacement of parts, repair and replacement of upholstered parts.  The repair and installation of electrical and mechanical controls related to windows, doors, and air conditioners is also taught.   The first year curriculum includes learning basic tools and equipment as well as basic auto body skills. The second and third years incorporate the learning and practice of metal straightening (simple), mig welding, painting and refinishing, detailing, body and frame alignment.

Prerequisites:  Math, Science, Communications, Dry and Liquid Measurement Skills

  • Mig Welding (continuous, plug, spot, and lap)
  • Painting and refinishing: 
    1.  Single stage
    2.  Two stage (basecoat/clearcoat)
    3.  Three stage (tri-coat)
  • Detailing (exterior and interior)
  • Body and frame alignment
  • Installation and accessories
  • Removing and installing glass
  • Cost estimating
  • Panel replacement and repair


Job Outlook
Indications are that through 2010, employment potential for this occupation will be stable in this area with continued, steady growth expected.
 
Further Education Opportunities
Opportunities exist at technical schools, junior colleges, most Commonwealth campuses, and at accredited four year colleges and universities.
