LOGISTICS & MATERIALS MANAGEMENT

Course Description

Upon successful completion of the Logistics and Materials Management program, the student iwll be prepared for employment in businesses engaged in distribution, warehousing, manufacturing, transportation, wholesaling, and retailing of goods.

LMM presents the major aspects of logistics and materials management in the current business environment.  Topics covered include modes of transportation, types of carriers and their application, the use of various documents, basics of warehouse operations, and the principles of inventory management, and current information technology concepts in logistics operation.  Students receive OSHA compliant instruction in the use of materials handling equipment, including both powered and non-powered industrial trucks.  In addition to technical skills, the curriculum includes career development, business mathematics, communications, management principles, job retention, and work ethics skills.

Additional hands-on experience is available by participation in merchandising in the Mall and Cooperative Education programs.  LMM students are members in DECA, a student organization that offers leadership training and a chance to compete in events designed to stimulate industry interest, further vocational competence, and provide scholarship opportunities for postsecondary education.

Prerequisites:  Applied Communications, Applied Math, Computer Literacy

Job Outlook
 Many logistics and materials management career options fall under the high priority occupations as designed by State government.  Employment for these occupations will increase as the distribution industry expands in our area over the next decade.

Further Education Opportunities
Further education opportunities exist at technical schools, junior colleges, most commonwealth campuses, and at accredited four-year colleges and universities.
