MASONRY

Instructor, William Doutt

Course Description

Masonry students develop entry-level skills by working with concrete blocks, bricks, stone, ceramic tile, and artificial materials.  Students use these materials to construct foundations, walls, fireplaces, and special projects such as ceramic floors and walls.  Students in masonry work with concrete in real life projects, learn to read blueprints, and mathematics of the trade.  Mathematics is especially important in estimating construction jobs.

A mason needs to possess average or above average strength and stamina, as masonry work frequently requires lifting heavy units of material repeatedly for extended periods of time.  Masonry students work extensively on the school's house projects laying the foundation, pouring basement and garage floors, brick casing the house, doing interior ceramic floors and walls.  All other concrete work, including footings, driveway, sidewalk, and curbing is done by the students under direct supervision of the instructor.  Employment opportunities for masons and concrete workers is excellent.
