ACC 111  Accounting I (4 CR.)
A course covering the basic concepts of the accounting cycle for a service business and a proprietorship of a merchandising business. Included are the following: journalization, posting, adjusting and closing entries, worksheets with adjustments, and financial statements, payroll, payroll taxes and tax reports.

ACC 112  Accounting II (4 CR.)
A continuation of Accounting I that further develops the concepts for a proprietorship of a merchandising business. Included are the following: special journals, accounts receivable, accounts payable, subsidiary ledgers, petty cash.
 *Medical secretary students apply theory and concepts in completing the accounting records for a medical office.

ENG 111  Business English I (6 CR.)
This course introduces the student to the study of English grammar essentials as a foundation for effective use in business-related written and oral communication. The classification and correct usage of words, phrases, clauses and functional sentence parts is taught. Emphasis is placed on the application of rules of standard written English.

ENG 112 Business English II (6 CR.)
This course is a continuation of Business English I, with special emphasis on the rules of punctuation. Capitalization, end marks, commas, semicolons, apostrophes, and quotations are covered. Practical applications of various types of business letters, memorandums, minutes, and news releases, as well as resumes, cover letters, and job applications, are taught. Emphasis is placed on principles of standard written English and accurate effective format. (Prerequisite: ENG 111)

MAT 101  Business Math (Business) (4 CR.)
Introduces basic mathematical skills that would be needed in business environment. This course covers topics such a decimals; fractions; percents; finding percentages, rates and bases; maintaining a checking account; working with weights measures; and calculating interest.

CSC 124  Access 2007 (1 CR.)
A brief overview of database software utilizing MS Access.  Students will become familiar with the basics of creating, revising, and printing database documents and queries.

CSC 125 Word 2003 (3.3 CR.)
This course provides individuals with a basic understanding of word processing MS Word software. An introduction to the computer is given, along with specific detailed instruction in word processing functions such as editing, file management, formatting, and document creation and retrieval. Advanced instruction includes page formats, merge, macros, sort, and document assembly. Students should be able to type 40 wpm before taking the course.

CSC 127  Desktop Publishing (2 CR.)
Desktop Publishing is the creation of words and graphics on a personal computer, combined into finished pages and printed in final form on a laser printer. This course introduces the student to the basics of page layout and publishing on the computer using PageMaker software. The student should have good keyboard and typing skills. Students will learn various typefaces along with other techniques associated with the printing industry. (Prerequisite: Typing)

CSC 128  Excel 2007 (2 CR.)
This course introduces students to the use of a spreadsheet program. It assumes no previous experience with computers. Topics covered in this course involve general computer basics, spreadsheet terminology, building a worksheet, formatting and printing a worksheet, enhancing a worksheet, building a worksheet with functions and macros, graphing using Excel, and Lookup functions.

SEC 101   Typing I (4 CR.)
Includes basic keyboarding skills as well as preparation of business correspondence, tables, reports, and sample documents. Course is geared toward those who have no typing skill, but those with prior skills can also be accommodated. Speed and accuracy are developed and emphasized.

SEC 102   Typing II (4 CR.)
Refines basic keyboarding skills as well as preparation of detailed business correspondence. Course is geared towards those who have basic keyboarding skills and a basic formatting knowledge. (Prerequisite: Typing I)

SEC 118  Office Procedures (2.6 CR.)
This course offers a careful study of the material that will be needed in a modern business office and an understanding of the increasing role technology is playing in the day-to-day activities of a secretary. Topics such as the image of the professional office worker, handling stressful situations in the office, processing incoming and outgoing mail, using the telephone, scheduling and itinerary processing, professional dress for the office and finding a job are covered in this class. A brief introduction to MS PowerPoint is included.

SEC 120  Business Machine Transcription (1 CR.)
Business Machine Transcription is a course that incorporates word processing to transcribe dictated material utilizing a dictaphone and prerecorded tapes. Students progress from simple to complex material varying in subject content. Students use typing skills to prepare letters, memos, enumerated lists, itineraries, broadcasts, and legal documents. Spelling and proofreading skills are reinforced through exercises preceding each assignment.

SEC 199 (Business) - This is an OPTIONAL ACTIVITY   (4 CR)       
The internship is a six-week supervised field experience in which the business secretary gains practical experience in a general business office setting.  All required courses must be successfully completed, along with the recommendation of instructors, to participate.  The internship coordinator reserves the right to announce minimum grade requirements for participation approval.
