ACC 110 Accounting Concepts/Payroll
(2.6 CR.)
A course that introduces the basic concepts of the accounting cycle for a
service business. Included are the following: journalization, posting, adjusting
and closing entries, worksheets with adjustments, and financial statements,
payroll and payroll taxes.

CSC 126 Word (2.5 CR.)
This course provides individuals with a basic understanding of word processing
utilizing MS Word software. An introduction to the computer is given along
with specific detailed instruction in word processing functions such as editing,
file management, formatting, and document creation and retrieval. Advanced
instruction includes page formats, merge, macros, sort, and document assembly.
Students should be able to type 40 wpm before taking the course.

ENG 111 Business English I (6 CR.)
This course introduces the student to the study of English grammar essentials as
a foundation for effective use in business-related written and oral
communication. The classification and correct usage of words, phrases, clauses
and functional sentence parts is taught. Emphasis is placed on the application
of rules of standard written English.

ENG 112 Business English II (6 CR.)
This course is a continuation of Business English I, with special emphasis on
the rules of punctuation. Capitalization, end marks, commas, semicolons,
apostrophes, and quotations are covered. Practical applications of various types
of business letters, memorandums, minutes, and news releases, as well as
resumes, cover letters, and job applications, are taught. Emphasis is placed on
principles of standard written English and accurate effective format.

MAT 111 Business Math (Medical) (3.5 CR.)
Introduces basic mathematics skills that would be needed in a business
environment. This course covers topics such a decimals; fractions; percents;
finding percentages, rates and bases; and maintaining a checking account.

MED 101 Intro to Medical Assisting (2 CR.)
An introduction and orientation to the profession of Medical Assisting and
Medical Specialties. Topics taught in this unit include: Medical Law and Ethics,
Communications, Patient Teaching, Quality Assurance, Problem Solving Techniques,
and Time and Stress Management.

MED 102 Clinical Procedures I (2 CR.)
Methods of infection control will be emphasized as well as procedures commonly
utilized in a physician's office or clinical setting. Instruction will cover:
Microbiology, Medical Asepsis/ Infection Control, Universal Precautions,
Compliance with State and Federal Regulations, Hepatitis and AIDS, Disinfection
and Sterilization, Patient Examination, Vital Signs, Eye and Ear Examinations,
and Hot/ Cold Applications

MED 103 Clinical Procedures II (3 CR.)
Specialty examination procedures, body mechanics, and ambulation assistant
devices are covered in this unit. Specialty examinations include: Pediatrics,
Gynecology, Obstetrics, Colon, and Orthopedics. Additional topics include:
Administering an EKG, Office Minor Surgery, Preparing a Sterile Field, Oxygen
Administration, Pulse Oximetry, Radiology and Employability Skills.

MED 104 Clinical Procedures III (2 CR.)
This course provides an understanding of Pharmacology and related usage.
Emphasis is placed on: Dosage Calculations, Classification of Drugs, Proper
Methods of Administering Injections, Oral Meds, and Topical Meds. Instruction is
also given in: Eye and Ear Instillations, Preparing Prescriptions, Administering
Tine and Mantoux Tests, and Phoning New and Refill Prescriptions to Pharmacy.

MED 105 Clinical Procedures IV (2 CR.)
Instruction is given in First Aid, CPR, and Laboratory Procedures. Laboratory
coverage will place emphasis on Specimen Collection and Handling, Phlebotomy,
Identification of Bacteria, Urinalysis, CBC, Serological Tests, Urine Drug and
Pregnancy Testing, Mono Test, Gonorrhea Testing, Use of the Centrifuge, and
Wound and Throat Cultures.

MED 115 Medical
Terminology/ Anatomy and Physiology (10 CR.)
This course is designed to give the student a working knowledge of medical terms
and a basic knowledge of anatomy and physiology. Students will learn medical
prefixes, suffixes and word roots which can then be used to define most medical
terms correctly used. Along with the anatomy and physiology of the body systems,
a study is included of disorders, diagnostic tests, categories of medication,
and related terms.

MED 119 Medical Office Procedures (4CR)
Instruction presented in this course is directly related to the duties that are
performed in a medical office setting. A number of subjects are covered
extensively including: filing, medical insurance forms preparation, and coding.
Additional material includes interpersonal skills needed in the medical office,
telephone communications, and professionalism in the interviewing process and on
the job.

MED 120 Medical Transcription (1.3 CR.)
Medical Machine Transcription is a course that incorporates word processing to
transcribe dictated material utilizing a dictaphone and pre-recorded medical
tapes. A knowledge of medical terminology and typing is needed in completing a
variety of medical documents that include: Histories and Physicals, X-ray
Reports, Operative Reports, Pathology Reports, Autopsy Reports, and Discharge
Summaries.

MED 198 Externship (4 CR.)
This externship is a six-week supervised field experience in which the Medical
Assistant student gains practical experience in a physician's office of clinic
utilizing skills acquired in previous courses. All required courses in the
Medical Assistant program must be successfully completed to participate in the
externship. The externship coordinator reserves the right to announce minimum
course requirements within the medical major courses and further reserves the
right to prohibit anyone from participating if minimum standards are not met.

SEC 101 Typing I (4 CR.)
Includes basic keyboarding skills as well as preparation of business
correspondence, tables, reports, and sample documents. Course is geared toward
those who have no typing skill, but those with prior skills can also be
accommodated. Speed and accuracy are developed and emphasized.

SEC 102 Typing II (4 CR.)
Refines basic keyboarding skills as well as preparation of detailed business
correspondence. Course is geared towards those who have basic keyboarding skills
and a basic formatting knowledge. (Prerequisite: Typing I)

SEC 113 Speedwriting (3 CR)
This course offers instruction in an abbreviated writing system called
SuperWrite. It is based primarily on longhand and secondarily on phonetics.
Learning SuperWrite is simplified because the alphabet is used rather than
special symbols. The goal of the course it to increase the student's speed in
making legible notes from dictation and transcribe them into usable form.
